Car Design Student Project – Jonathan Kasumba

Jonathan Kasumba is one of the most treasured students of Launchpad Academy. A 33 year old Industrial Designer living in Uganda, Jonathan impressed us the very first day he approached us with his simplicity and desire to learn. Despite having cultural differences and having years of work experience in the design industry, Jonathan was firm about joining Launchpad’s Diploma in Car Design course to learn more about the design philosophy followed here in India.

‘The course enabled me to understand manual rendering techniques and new ideation methodologies the most. Sathiyaseelan sir’s experience is instantly reflected in his teaching and I just can’t get over his side view workflow’ says Jonathan about our Diploma in Car Design course. You can read more about Jonathan, his passion for car design and his future plans as a designer in one of our previous articles featured on him.

Jonathan was an active student of Batch 4 of our Diploma in Car Design course and recently we received his final project after the completion of the course. Like Siva Shanker and Royce De Souza, Jonathan too left us spellbound with his innovative concept car for urban transportation (task for the final project). But what sets apart Jonathan from the rest of our students is that he is not an Indian, yet he successfully designed a 3-wheeled futuristic car for easier transportation for crowded, chaotic and polluted Indian cities. And what’s more impressive is  the way Jonathan designed his presentation; clearly explaining every phase of the design process, from drawing inspiration to rendering the finalized concept to everything that comes in between.

Jonathan names his project ‘Reflex’ and takes an innovative approach for presentation by creating a storyboard of his own. He briefly explains the chaotic situation that Indian commuters face with the unwanted traffic, lack of wider roads and pollution. And then, he takes Jay, a fictional Graphic Designer living in a busy Indian city as the character of the presentation and explains what can ‘Reflex’ do and why ‘Reflex’ is needed in the first place.

Jonathan shows instances of bio-mimicry and cites how nature’s design evolution serves as an inspiration to design his three-wheeled, single-seater car. Jonathan also uses up-to date technologies of the recent times to develop the design language and uses loud and expressive colors for representation.

Car Design Student Project – Royce De Souza

Royce De Souza is one of those bright design students whom Launchpad Academy will treasure for a long time to come. Royce completed his BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art) from Goa College of Fine Art, specializing in Illustration. Currently working as a Visual Designer in an IT firm, 24 year old Royce plans to pursue his career in transportation design and is hoping to get into one of the top design schools in India. ‘It’s actually a childhood thing/wish. I have been crazy for cars from the very first time I saw them. So all I drew was cars and nothing else than cars!’ says Royce about his passion for cars and car design.

Royce De Souza belonged to Batch 2 of our Diploma in Car Design course. ‘I got to know about Launchpad’s Diploma in Car Design course through a friend from Facebook. After talking to one of their student coordinators and clearing my doubts regarding the course, I was eagerly hoping to join. The course helped me to a great extent and more importantly, gave me a platform to showcase and improvise my works’ says Royce. Speaking about Sathiya Sir, Royce goes like this ‘I learnt many things about transportation design from Sathiya Sir. He explained car design and sketching concepts to students in a very convincing manner and made sure we are on the same page as him. Also, he is a very patient teacher’

As a part of his final project and assignments, Royce designed an urban vehicle that combines the benefits of a 2-wheeler as well as a 4-wheeler. According to Royce, Indian city roads are crowded, chaotic, dusty and polluted. While 2-wheelers offer the benefit of squeezing through tough traffic and reaching the destination faster, 4-wheelers come with great comfort and seating space. However, 2-wheelers are unsafe and uneasy to drive, and at the same time, 4-wheelers are unnecessarily big for a single passenger, that occupy a large amount of the road causing traffic. So the challenge was to create an urban vehicle that can combine the good features of a 2-wheeler and a 4-wheeler. And we think Royce has done as excellent job on the challenge he was given. See for yourself and be ready to be blown away!

Concept

Concept

As shown in the above image, Royce recognized the good features of a 2-wheeler such as agility, small footprint, quick getaway and also the perks of a 4-wheeler such as comfort, safety and luggage space. Royce’s concept city car is a beautiful blend of both these features offering additional features like 360 degree turning, dual riding positions and airbags for safety.

Components

Components

The concept car runs on fuel like every other car that we see today and has a powertrain to rotate the 360 degree turning wheels. It has seat lifts, sliding doors and footsteps that open automatically for easy accessibility. Below the handle bar, Royce has ensured that there is enough foot space for operation and also place for tool kit and luggage. The handle bars are adjustable for ease of operation, and airbags, seat belts and automatic breaking systems (ABS) are included for safety.

The car also offers great handling capabilities, owing to its 360 degree turning wheels feature.

Launchpad Academy aims to help car design enthusiasts irrespective of their age and educational background by giving them the right training and platform to design cars. We hope to see more and more talented and creative designers like Royce De Souza in our Academy and see them reach great heights in the design world. Car Design Student Project – Siva Shanker

Siva Shanker is one of brightest design students Launchpad Academy has seen till date, who has a lot of creative ideas and a great design mindset. A mechanical engineer living in Chennai, Siva says he was drawn to cars and car design at a very early point in his childhood. Though being an engineering graduate, Siva wants to establish his career as a car designer for the sheer love and passion for car design. Aiming to get into design schools like NID/IDC, Siva is hopefully preparing for his second attempt to clear CEED, which he failed to clear by a mere 1.2 marks in his first attempt. He is also looking for design related jobs in design studios and hoping to get one very soon.

Siva Shanker was an active student of Batch 2 of our Diploma in Car Design course and had attended one of our Car Design workshops in Chennai. Moved by the way Mr. Sathiyaseelan Gangasalam introduced various car design concepts to the workshop participants, Siva registered to our Diploma in Car Design to learn more from the mentor. He says the course helped him in immense proportions to have an in-depth understanding of car design, particularly about car design terminologies, proportions of a car, sketching skills and especially digital rendering using Photoshop.

Making good use of our 3 month online course and its intensive approach towards car design, Siva was able to complete all the assignments and finally a car design project of his own by the end of the course. His project ‘Triviam-Three Wheel City Car’ is a reflection of Siva’s ingenious skill for car design and his deeper understanding of car design concepts. Have a look at Triviam and be ready to blown away!

Final Concept

Final Concept

Triviam is a three wheeled city car that aims to minimize the clutter in today’s urban transportation and slither through any Indian road burdened with traffic. A compact city car capable enough to seat two people, Triviam as Siva Shanker says can maneuver through narrow, traffic clad roads quickly and effortlessly. The car has all the maneuverability of a two wheeler, yet the safety and protection that a regular car offers. Moreover the car is futuristic in its concept as Siva calls it an electric car, driven by a hub wheel motor. The car runs on powered batteries which will be placed under the floor panel.  Also check out Siva’s Facebook page to see more car sketches by him.

Launchpad Academy aims to help car design enthusiasts irrespective of their age and educational background by giving them the right training and platform to design cars. We hope to see more and more talented and creative designers like Siva Shanker in our Academy and see them reach great heights in the design world.
