B.Des in IIT Bombay-UCEED Examination

B.Des in IIT Bombay

B.Des in IIT Bombay-UCEED Examination

Attention all 10+2 students! The wait is finally over. You don’t have to be disappointed that there’s no Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in IIT Bombay anymore! One of the best design schools in India, IDC IIT Bombay has finally added a four year B.Des programme and a five year dual degree (B.Des + M.Des) programme to its much respected and much valued design courses. This makes IIT Bombay the only other IIT to offer a B.Des degree for undergraduates other than IIT Guwahati.

The first B.Des course in IIT Bombay will be commencing from this year i.e. 2015 and your performance in the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED) will decide your entry into this prestigious institution. Like CEED (India’s most regarded design entrance exam for PG design courses), UCEED will also be conducted by IIT Bombay. Launchpad Academy learned about this recent development at the earliest and went through the UCEED brochure thoroughly. Here’s everything you need to know about B.Des in IIT Bombay and the UCEED entrance exam as per the UCEED brochure released by the institution.

  • Kailash Gharat

Thank you IIT, IDC for launching B.Des in Bombay (Mumbai)

    • Amit

I will like to suggest you all that don’t get deviated from your jee exam because its very crucial time for it .On the other hand i like to say that for – in a company there is not as many recruitment of designers as that of engineers so opportunity is more of an engineer . Thus i would like to suggest not to deviate from your path ,concentrate on your pre-planned goal.

By looking some famous designers like Dilip Chhabria we should not change our goal .Think about every other designer qualified from an iit ,are every one famous like Dilip Chhabria ?

      • Kushal

ya there is less number of post for designers than engineers .Thus scope is less for getting every one good job in a good company.

        • An IDCian

First of all Your sole purpose in life shouldn’t be to get a job.

Irrespective of that, you can look up IDC alumni. People who do sit for the placements get placed(everyone of them) in MNCs for mindblowing packages. Those who don’t sit for placements become Entrepreneurs. They are all doing good in their own right. Most of the recent graduates are comparatively young so it will take time for them to get ‘famous’. Like Pranav Mistry for example. 🙂 Also, the design philosophy practiced in IDC is a little different(its not about getting famous).

Be informed and make your own informed decisions 🙂 Or be a bystander looking at the world fly past like a bullet train.

UCEED will give an opportunity to kids who never had an opportunity to explore design if they are creatively inclined. It will be a shame to keep them from enjoying the pleasure of creativity.

          • Varun

what is the amount of packages

          • Divyasha

I totally agree with you. With the times changing , the value of design courses will also increase. And who knows famous IIT engineers either?! XP

      • Sunny

The very reason you are deviating others from their path because you don’t flair for design.
Rather IIT is bringing opportunity to those who wish pursue their goals as a designer.Don’t unnecessarily try to be over smart, it will help you some day in some way.

      • Nikhil

sir kindly know what your speaking there are thousands of unemployed engineers out there.
those who have passed from the collages are working at call centers , india is filled with unemployed engineers, and there are various option in design now , so many that i cant even tell. and saying engineers have more options could be true about 10 years ago but not now.

      • VK

okay, name a famous engineer then looking at whom one can decide their goal.

      • Kushagra Dhawan

Yeah? Do engineering just because of jobs? Focus only on JEE just because it gets you to study in ‘IIT’? What about your interest? Your passion? Your personality, creativeness, imagination? Nothing? Opting and focusing on something that makes you think out of the box is just stupid because it MAYBE won’t get you placed somewhere? What are we? Cyborgs that intend to do jobs and earn and shit? Hell no

  • Cesc

The syllabus is quite new for a 12th std student. Can you suggest any books for this syllabus?

    • Hi. As mentioned in the article, the examination consists of two parts, Part 1 and Part 2, whose questions are framed based on the following six topics.

      1. Visualization and Spatial Ability
      2. Observation and Design Sensitivity
      3. Environmental and Social Awareness
      4. Analytical and Logical Reasoning
      5. Language and Creativity
      6. Design Thinking and Problem Solving

The internet is a great place to get started on the above mentioned design topics. You can refer YouTube videos or visit design blogs. Since UCEED is the first of its kind exam, you won’t find any previous year question papers or study guides. However you could refer to previous year NID DAT (aka NEED) or CEED entrance exam papers which are very similar to UCEED format. For more details on entrance exams like CEED and NEED, read few of our other articles. Thank you.

    • There’s no official announcement from IIT Bombay on the number of seats yet Abhishek.

      • Ikram Shah

Seems like totally 30 seats at IIT Bombay (reservation is there)

  • Danish Khan

Would there be any reservations of OBC-NCL ,SC-ST? and if yes then how much?

    • Hi Danish. Here’s how the available number of seats are distributed among the reserved categories.

      OBC-NCL 27%
      SC 15%
      ST 7.5%
      PwD 3%

  • Vriddhachalam

what are all the branches offered??… and is autombile design or related course available in this bachelors degree???

    • Hi Vriddhachalam. This is the first time ever that IIT Bombay has introduced a UG program and there’s no official announcement on the branches offered yet. However, IDC-IIT Bombay offers its M.Des course in the following 5 design domains.

      1. Industrial Design
      2. Visual Communication
      3. Animation Design
      4. Interaction Design
      5. Mobility and Vehicle Design

We are hoping that IIT Bombay’s B.Des course as well will include all of these design domains.

  • Anjan.M

    Dear sir,

If yes, Kindly guide me with the admission procedure and UCEED.

    • Yes Anjan, any Diploma student is certainly eligible for the B.Des course in IIT Bombay. There’s no announcement on the admissions yet and regarding the examination, kindly go through the article again.

      • Anjan.M

        Thank you sir..

  • Mudra

Hii, I am a third year BCom student. am i eligible to apply for the BDES course ???? I have passed HSC in 2012. IF yes can you suggest me study material for the UCEED exam.

    • Hi Mudra, according to the UCEED brochure those who appeared for the first time in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2013 or earlier are not eligible. Sorry about that.

  • Rishab garg

i am giving my cbse exams from commerce stream , am i eligible to apply for the B.des. course ????

    • Yes Rishab, you are eligible. Any 12th student, pursuing CBSE or State syllabus, or any other equivalent diploma are eligible for the course. • Yes Atul, you are eligible. Senior Secondary School education conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with a minimum of five subjects is allowed.

  • Anjan.M

    Dear sir,
What will be the course structure for 4 years B.Des at IITB..?
Do they offer B.Des in Interior designing.?

    • Hi Anjan. This is the first time ever that IIT Bombay has introduced a UG program and there’s no official announcement on the branches offered yet. However, IDC-IIT Bombay has been offering its M.Des course in the following 5 design domains.

      1. Industrial Design
      2. Visual Communication
      3. Animation Design
      4. Interaction Design
      5. Mobility and Vehicle Design

So we have to wait for IDC’s official announcement on the branches offered to answer your question.

  • Karttik Singh

    Dear Sir
Am currently in class 11 science and want to give UCEED 2016 is there any sample paper or guidance available on internet

    • No Karttik, since UCEED 2015 will be the first UCEED exam hosted by IDC,IIT Bombay. However, we can certainly hope for a lot of sample papers and study material once the exam is over. Check out our blog regularly for any news on UCEED 2016, study material for UCEED and other design related information.

  • Souvik

    sir ,
do uceed have any interview and portfolio round in its admission process ?

    • Hi Souvik. We don’t have any definite information on that but as per the UCEED brochure, UCEED score alone won’t guarantee you a seat in IDC, IIT Bombay. That means studio tests and interviews would be there, similar to CEED.

      • Souvik

thank you ! can u give any idea about portfolio and studio test …. as this is the first time ,so no one knows any thing about it .what r the timings for the studio test and interview and when uceed session is starting ?

        • Sorry Souvik. We don’t have any information on that.

  • ARIJIT ROY

Suggest some books for uceed exams please……

    • Hello Arjit. As mentioned in the many comments above, this is the first UCEED exam and the chances of internet having UCEED study material are fairly thin. However you could start your preparation by doing research on the following six topics.

      1. Visualization and Spatial Ability
      2. Observation and Design Sensitivity
      3. Environmental and Social Awareness
      4. Analytical and Logical Reasoning
      5. Language and Creativity
      6. Design Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Shalini

    Hello sir,
I have completed my Btech in Computers, and want to apply for B.Des, am i eligible? I have completed my 12th board back in 2010.

    • Hi Shalini, according to the UCEED brochure those who appeared for the first time in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2013 or earlier are not eligible. Sorry about that.

  • Rishen

    Hi! I passed 12th in 2013… Can I apply?

    • Hi Rishen, according to the UCEED brochure those who appeared for the first time in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2013 or earlier are not eligible. However if your results were announced after June 2013, you are eligible.

  • Saurabh dehraj

i had done +2 in 2012 and my result came on 28-05-2012 am i eligible for UCEED ?

    • Hi Saurabh, according to the UCEED brochure those who appeared for the first time in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2013 or earlier are not eligible. Sorry about that.

  • Saurabh dehraj

    than my question why not
because if jee main is giving realxation for 3 years why not they ??
and even nid gives relaxation too
somebody answer my question with good reasons

    • Hi Saurabh. We are just informing design students about the UCEED exam through this article and nothing more. In my opinion IIT-B people must be the most preferred ones to answer this question.

  • Joel

    how to prepare for uceed

  • Rohan

    Sir ,
    I appered 12 in2014 with 61%.
so please tell me whether i am eligible for thiss uceed.

  • Shivani Yadav

Hi! I am pursuing Commerce without Maths in Class 12th ? Is maths necessary for B.Des at IIT Bombay?
    Thanks
    Shivani

    • No Shivani. There’s no specific mention by IIT Bombay on the stream you are pursuing in your 12th to be eligible for UCEED. So I think your way is clear.

  • Girish

Hello sir, I wanted to know that
    B.Des is equivalent to a degree ??
N is it govt. Recognized course ?

    • B.Des is an undergraduate ‘degree’ offered by IDC, IIT Bombay Girish. Of course it is government recognized.

  • Adnan wani

Hi sir, can you please provide an idea about the fee structure for this program, as design courses usually tend to have a sky rocketing course fee.
Also, will the competition and difficulty level be same as IIT JEE?

    • Hi Adnan. There’s no official announcement on the fee structure of B.Des in IIT Bombay course yet. I will let you know once there’s an official announcement on that.
And coming to the complexity of UCEED, JEE and UCEED are entirely different streams. The former is engineering and the latter is design. So it’s is really hard to compare these entirely different domains where one is more technical in nature and the other is more inclined towards design, creativity and imagination. But the competition is fairly less I suppose, compared to the number of people appearing for JEE.

  • VIDHI

I have just appeared 12 th board exam and now appearing for JEE MAINS..
My question is What is it basically and what is the advantage for B.Des/M.Des???
AND What is the further scope for the same??

    • Hi Vidhi. B.Des (Bachelor of Design) is an undergraduate course in design. Only two IITs offer B.Des, one being IIT Bombay and the other being IIT Guwahati. Design is an amazing field to pursue your career in if you have an edge over creativity, sketching, colors, out of the box ideas etc. As mentioned in one of the above comments, it is more of a creative domain and a lot of people who feel engineering is overrated and overcrowded are turning their face towards design. You have Transportation Design, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Product Design and many other specializations to take up as a career option. Just so you know, there is a great need for creative designers in India and since India has the highest number of youth of our age i.e. in our 20s, a lot of design oriented MNCs are shifting to emerging markets like India and China. Let’s take Interior Design as an example. Currently there is a need for 100000 interior designers in India alone. So you do the math!

Go through the rest of the blog to know more.

    • VIDHI

Do different institutes have different designing courses or IIT Bombay will have different designing or animation course???

  • Rish

Is it advisable to switch career path from engineering to designing? I’m appearing the JEE this year. I haven’t quite ventured into the creative aspect of my mind get, I guess, because I’ve focused on the JEE. Mind giving a kind suggestion, please? Thank you!

    • Hi Rish. Most of our Diploma in Car Design students are actually engineering students. Though engineering and design are entirely different domains, it doesn’t mean they are not interrelated. Since engineering is too mainstream these days and there are already thousands of engineers who are unemployed despite having a degree, I would say design industry is worth a shot. Read the reply to the above comment to know the scope and demand of design in India.

We have an article for students just like you on how to shift your domain from engineering to design.
      http://launchpadaca.wpengine.com/from-engineer-to-designer-how-to-do-it-in-7-steps/
      Hope it helps you!

  • Akanksha

do we have product designing as a course in UG and do we have same in IIT Delhi
    thanks

    • There hasn’t been an official announcement on the branches offered in B.Des programme at IIT Bombay Akanksha. So we are as unaware as you are about the branches offered. And no, IIT Delhi doesn’t offer any UG courses.
For more details on design schools in India and the courses they offer, refer to this article of ours
      http://launchpadaca.wpengine.com/top-10-design-schools-in-india/. Hope it helps!

  • Pandey akash

Sir, I have passed my 12th in 2013 and i am appearing for uceed for the first time.I want to know that, am i illegible for this exam or not this year in 2015 uceed for the first time

    • Hi Akash. You are only eligible if your 12th results were declared after June 2013.

  • Subhajeet

sir can i apply uceednext year?i am 12th passout in 2014

    • Hi Subhajeet. I will explain you the current situation with UCEED 2015. The only people who are eligible for UCEED 2015 are the ones who cleared their 12th in 2014 or whose 12th results were declared after June 2013. So I think the same pattern will be applying for UCEED 2016. So there’s a great chance that you might fail to qualify the eligibility criteria next year, if your 12th results were announced before June 2014. Think about it.

  • Achal

Hi, I just gave my board exams and Im preparing for JEE. I want to be a game designer or an animator for Japanese anime. Is switching from engineering to design is beneficial for me?

Also if you can please answer this question regarding UCEED,

    http://www.quora.com/What-is-UCEED-all-about

    Thank you very much sir
This can be a life changing decision for me!

    • Hi Achal. I think it’s too early to comment on the branches offered under B.Des in IIT Bombay, since there is no official announcement from the institution yet. However, IDC,IIT-B has animation under its design domains and offers M.Des in animation. So I’m assuming the B.Des course will have animation too.

Speaking about animation, I think it’s a great alternative to engineering. I have a few friends of mine working in the animation industry and according to them most of the animation you see in Hollywood movies are outsourced to Bangalore studios. Plus the vast world of internet could be your canvas if you are really willing to work hard and put your ideas into real work. There is a great demand for animators in India and the corresponding supply for this demand is very less. Because every one is after engineering!

It’s totally up to you to shift your preferences from engineering to animation. Most of our Diploma in Car Design students are engineers in fact. I’m an engineer myself who is pursuing content writing today. It’s definitely going to be a bumpy ride to shift from engineering to design, but if you are willing to brace the storm and swim along, you will definitely reach the shore!

For more information on shifting from engineering to design, you could read this article
      http://launchpadaca.wpengine.com/from-engineer-to-designer-how-to-do-it-in-7-steps/

    • Karttik Singh

I also want to be an animator for Japanese anime
and am looking forward for that in IDC iit Bombay

      • Hi Karttik. I think the above comment answers all your queries. Please go through it.

        • Achal

When do you think IITB will release info about the branches? Because I really want to shift from engineering to animation. Since the syllabus of JEE and UCEED completely different if don’t make the right choice now I might mess up both of my exams.
So any ideas when IITB will release the info regarding branches?

Also can I expect game designing courses in IITB?

          • Here’s the link to the newly launched UCEED website. Stay hooked to it to get any latest information.
            http://www.uceed.in/

As per the previous brochure released by IITB, the exam is on May 31st. My suggestion to you is to not to entirely rely on UCEED for your game design career as I don’t think IDC is going to have a game design course. Because the five major design domains in IIT B are the following

            1. Industrial Design
            2. Visual Communication
            3. Animation Design
            4. Interaction Design
            5. Mobility and Vehicle Design

Since you have focused on JEE so far, my suggestion is have JEE as your first priority. But in the background !also prepare for UCEED. Choose your priorities wisely. There’s no hurry!

  • Sunita

I am an NRI. Are there going to be centers outside India, nearby or in Saudi Arabia? And any information about NRI seats?

    • Hi Sunita, I don’t think there are any centers outside India and B.Des is not a distant education course.

      • Sunita

I am fully aware that it’s not a distant learning course, but are there any NRI seats available like those available for SCs and STs ? Or will I get admission via the entrance only?

        • Yes Sunita. Seats are available for foreign nationals and NRIs. The seats are supernumerary i.e. there is no specific announcement on the number of seats available, yet the number is going to increase with more qualifications in UCEED. However, note that NRI students and foreign nationals won’t get any reservations like SCs and STs do.

  • Vaibhav

Sir I have passed 12th in 2013…is there any chance for me to get eligible for this…its really important for me to apply…Please help me sir

    • Hi Vaibhav, you are only eligible if your results were announced after June 2013. Or else no. Hope you clear the eligibility criteria. All the best.

  • Shweta

    Is there fashion design course?

    • No Shweta. IDC, IIT-B doesn’t offer fashion design.

  • Saif

    Sir
I want to know what is the total no of seats available for the course?

    • Sorry Saif. There’s no official announcement on the number of seats available yet.

  • Bhumika

Is there any possibility that Fashion design or even fashion communication will be introduced for the B.Des programme?

    • Honestly Bhumika, I don’t know. I’m not a representative of IIT Bombay.
Fashion design in IIT Bombay, mostly no.
The internet is all yours to find information on the colleges that offer fashion design and the types of courses they offer.

      • Bhumika

Yes Sir, I have applied for the top most fashion colleges in India just wanted to know if I could increase my options. Thanks a lot 🙂

  • Mallick

wat r d courses available in iitb n iitg under b.des? n also d combined courses. Thnk u

    • There’s no official announcement on the branches offered in IIT Bombay yet. Please refer http://www.uceed.in/ for more information.
IIT G offers B.Des course under industrial design and visual communication.

  • Aum

Hi sir, what is the no. Of seats in UCEED

  • Aum

Sir,is product design available in UCEED?

    • Aum

Sir,will there be any studio test after the entrance exam?

      • Yes. Studio test and interview will be conducted for students who clear UCEED and gain entry to their merit list.

    • No official announcement from the IIT Bombay on the branches offered. Product Design, not sure. But most likely Industrial Design will be offered. Please refer http://www.uceed.in/ for more information.

  • Tina

hello sir can i prepare for this exam in 2 months as i just came to knkw about it ? please tel me the resources n books to refer to ? thank u in advance

    • We are just informing you about the exam Tina. Since this is the first UCEED exam, even we are unaware of any available study material for the exam. Please focus on the following six topics to prepare.

      1. Visualization and Spatial Ability
      2. Observation and Design Sensitivity
      3. Environmental and Social Awareness
      4. Analytical and Logical Reasoning
      5. Language and Creativity
      6. Design Thinking and Problem Solving

Hope you manage to study within 2 months. Please refer http://www.uceed.in/ for more information.

  • SUBHANGI

sIR,What is the prospect of B.Des & does it is better than B.tec

    • They are two entirely different domains to compare Subhangi. One is more focused on design, art and imagination and the other is more focused on technology. It depends on you, how well you make use of the course you are pursuing and find the best opportunities. No matter which course you pursue, if you give your 100% and never stop learning, you will definitely find success. I’m super excited for this 😀
I was not able to clear NEED (U.G.) this year. I lost by 2.5 marks 🙁 By very less margin.
This feels like a dream come true. 😀

Sir can you suggest some books for this entrance. Is the Engineering Drawing book ‘ND Bhat’ any helpful? I also heard English grammar is an important part of syllabus. I’m ready to do lots of hard work for it. But the problem is I’m a partial dropper doing B.Tech. 1st year so i cant do coaching. Engineering drawing is my strong subject, I’m okay at reasoning and pretty good in English. Please suggest some study material so that I can be confident about my preparation. Can you send me some practice questions? Regards.

    • Hi Adnan. Since this is the first UCEED exam, even we are unaware of any available study material for the exam. Please focus on the following six topics to prepare.

      1. Visualization and Spatial Ability
      2. Observation and Design Sensitivity
      3. Environmental and Social Awareness
      4. Analytical and Logical Reasoning
      5. Language and Creativity
      6. Design Thinking and Problem Solving

Sorry. This is all the information I can possibly give you now. The internet is vast and flooded with information. Please make a little bit of effort and explore.

  • Ganesh

Sir, could you please confirm if launch pad is providing training for UCEED 2015? Thanks. If not could you please suggest some crash course institutions? Thanks.

    • No dude. We don’t provide any coaching for UCEED 2015. We are just informing design students about the newly introduced course and the exam. Sorry. We are not aware of any institutions providing any coaching. The internet is vast and flooded with information. Please make a little bit of effort and explore.

So there are 30 seats allotted for the designing course. What does this mean? 30 seats per branch or 30 seats for all the branches included? O_o (5 students per branch?!)
